Nader Habibi

Professor of the Economics of the Middle East, Brandeis University

Nader Habibi is the Henry J. Leir Professor of the Economics of the Middle East at Brandeis University’s Crown Center for Middle East Studies. His research has focused on economic and financial conditions of oil-exporting Middle Eastern countries, particularly the Arab monarchies of the Persian Gulf. In his most recent research project he has investigated the wealth management strategies of the oil-rich Arab Monarchies. The foreign assets of these countries have increased to near 2 trillion dollars in recent years. Most of this wealth is controlled by the Sovereign Wealth Funds of these countries.Before joining Brandeis University in June 2007, Habibi served as managing director of economic forecasting and risk analysis for Middle East and North Africa in Global Insight Ltd. He has 20 years of experience in teaching, research and management positions; including vice-president for research in Iran Banking Institute (Tehran), assistant professor of economics in Bilkent University (Ankara), research fellow and lecturer on political economy of Middle East at Yale University. A regular contributor ofo articles and commenttaries to Middle East related media; he earned his Ph.D. in economics at Michigan State University.
