Leila Heckman

Senior Managing Director, Bear Stearns Companies, Inc.

Dr. Heckman is a Senior Managing Director at Bear Stearns Asset Management where she manages global and international strategies, while continuing to provide research to institutional client base. The Heckman team provides a disciplined approach to equity allocation for developed and emerging countries and sectors. Dr. Heckman has over twenty years experience in the financial services industry. Prior to joining Bear Stearns Asset Management in April 2005, she was CEO of Heckman Global Advisors. Previous to forming Heckman Global Advisors, she was at Salomon Smith Barney for 10 years where she was Managing Director of Global Asset Allocation. She publishes her recommendations in the Global Investment Outlook, the Emerging Market Equity Allocator, the All-Country Equity Allocator, US Balancing Act, and the Global Balancing Act. While at Salomon Smith Barney, she was a prominent member of the Asset Allocation Committee. In Institutional Investor’s Global Poll, she and her team were ranked #1 or #2 for five years in Asset Allocation. Dr. Heckman is often quoted by the press on international investing. She appeared on Kudlow and Cramer and has been a frequent guest on CNN and CNBC. She has extensive experience with speaking about global investing at endowment and foundation conferences. Additionally, papers written by Dr. Heckman and her team appeared in a number of publications, including the Journal of Portfolio Management and the Journal of Investing. Prior to joining Salomon Smith Barney, Dr. Heckman was Vice President at Alliance Capital (1990-1993) where she worked in the International Equity Division. Previous to Alliance Capital, she held product development and managerial positions at Sanford Bernstein (1987-1990), including the development of asset allocations systems. From 1980 to 1987, she served as Director of Credit Policy for the Bankcard Division at Citibank. Dr. Heckman received her BA in mathematics from Brown University in 1960; MS in Operations Research from Cornell University in 1968, where she was honored as a National Science Foundation Scholar; and a Ph.D. in 1981 in Statistics and Operations Research from Polytechnic University. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Polytechnic University where she heads up the Investment Committee for the Endowment Fund. She also sits on the Fund Board and Investment Committee of the Fieldston Schools. She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
