Thomas Bounty is the Managing Director of the Private Client Group of Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company, a member of Mass Mutual Financial Group. The Private Client Group is engaged in the development, placement and servicing of private placement variable insurance products. Prior to joining Mass Mutual, Tom was an Assistant Vice President and Senior Counsel for Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada (U.S.), where he was focused primarily on the legal and tax issues relating to private placement insurance products for over three years. Tom served as the in-house counsel and taxpayer representative with regard to PLR 200244001, which ultimately led to the issuance of Rev. Rul. 2003-91 and Rev. Rul. 2003-92. In these rulings, the IRS clarified the appropriate tax treatment of various investment structures used within private placement insurance products. Prior to joining Mass Mutual, he was Assistant Vice President and Senior Counsel - Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada (U.S.), Counsel - Aetna Financial Services, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, Life and Annuity – The Travelers Insurance Company, Associate – Shipman & Goodwin, and Law Clerk – T. Emmet Clarie, Chief Judge, United States District Court, Hartford, CT. Mr. Bounty received his B.A. from Keene State College and a J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law.
